Astro Aegis is an asteroids-like game where the player traverses space around a planet and clears it of pesky asteroids! The game features a rock-paper-scissors set of weapons and targets, where the player must rotate between the appropriate weapon for the asteroids they're trying to clear.

[NOTE]: Astro Aegis is a twin-stick shooter. While keyboard controls are supported, a gamepad is highly recommended.

Keyboard Controls (movement and shoot direction limited to 8 directions):

  • Use [W, A, S, D] to move the ship
  • Use the arrow keys to shoot in a direction
  • Change weapons with [Q, E] on keyboard

Gamepad Controls (chrome + native downloads only, there's a bug with gamepads on firefox):

  • Use D-Pad or L-stick to move the ship
  • Use the [ A, B, X, Y] (or similar face) buttons or R-stick to shoot
  • Change weapons with [L1, R1] (or similar shoulder buttons)

Gameplay Tips:

  • Weapons do extra damage to asteroids of the same color
  • Weapons gain more XP from destroying asteroids of same color
  • Shields can be earned by scoring
  • Each level consists of several waves
  • Build up score multiplier by not getting hit (lose multiplier on taking damage)
  • Sometimes its faster to meet an asteroid head-on than to chase after it

Downloads:

Linux, Windows, and Mac builds are available on the Release page of the Github repository

  • 3 weapons (with 5 levels each)

Astro Aegis is heavily influenced by Super Stardust, one of my favorite modern arcade games.

Originally created for the 2023 Raylib Slo-Jam, but under active development. The source code is available on Github.

TODO (wishlist):

  • configurable controls
  • touch/mobile support
  • non-asteroid enemies
  • resizeable window
  • leaderboards

if the world was suddenly threatened by asteroids from space, hurtling towards the surface of the earth, and they needed a single pilot, one man, with great skill at operating an aircraft, and impeccable aim,  to deliver humanity from the unfeeling, uncaring brutality of an asteroid onslaught, which would surely destroy civilized society as we know it, and, at worst, wipe away the human race as a automobile operator wipes away the bug on his windshield...

...they probably shouldn't call upon me

Rise, unlikely hero!

Super cool, and original, I love the atmosphere, but I'm really bad x)

Super nice! It was fun. I was able to get 400 points. I really liked the twist on the genre by making it on a sphere. No player-warping required :D

New high score (23464)(37445)

The camera is really good and the asteroids look great. Weapon matching to target is a nice gameplay touch. Runs buttery smooth on my RX 6800XT (lol). Low-res vocal samples are also really nice addition to the aesthetic.

I played for a while without using the down arrow because it causes the game to scroll in the web player. Then I realized I could download the native game. 10/10 would download again.

NOT EVEN CLOSE, only 450 points :c such fun addictive game!
